Dowpharma Commissions New Asymmetric Catalysis Facility to Address Growing Demand

Midland, MI - October 03, 2006

To support a growing pipeline of commercial custom synthesis projects, Dowpharmasm contract manufacturing services, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, has commissioned a homogeneous catalyst manufacturing facility in Midland, Mich. Operational since the second quarter of this year, the Midland site complements the existing commercial and research facilities in Cambridge, U.K., and allows Dowpharma to more effectively manage the rapidly growing demand for its proprietary catalyst systems and technologies.

Dowpharma offers pharmaceutical and fine chemicals customers a broad and deep chiral portfolio and a proven track record of applying these technologies to manufacture active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates on efficient and cost-effective commercial scales. Dowpharma delivers customized services and products from clinical development through to commercial scale and practices a number of business models to address the diverse needs of its customers.

“Asymmetric chemocatalysis technologies have come of age for the cost-effective manufacture of APIs and intermediates; Dowpharma is at the stage, with the portfolio of drugs that we support, where we needed to further expand our commercial catalyst supply base,” says Dr . Mark Cassidy, business director, Small Molecules, Dowpharma.

“We currently supply a number of commercial and late-phase clinical drugs, and over 10 of our catalytic systems have been operated at commercial scale, including the rhodium DuPhos™ catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation,” says Cassidy. “Having a demonstrated and commercially proven capability is important; our customers already face enough uncertainties in developing their drugs without compounding risk with commercially unproven or non-scaleable technology.”

“Developing the right technology is only part of it,” adds Cassidy. “Our customers have diverse needs, and it’s important that our business models are flexible in meeting these needs.” Pharmaceutical and fine chemicals companies can either contract Dowpharma to manufacture the chiral intermediate in either cGMP or non cGMP assets using its proprietary technology, or directly purchase the catalyst and operate the process in the facilities of their choice.

Dowpharma has a broad portfolio of chiral technologies, including asymmetric hydrogenation, biocatalysis, asymmetric hydroformylation and Trost asymmetric allylic alkylation. The company manufactures and sells catalyst systems to pharmaceutical and fine chemical companies, and also uses these technologies to produce pharmaceutical intermediates and APIs. The catalysts are available on a gram to multi-kilogram scale. Collaborating with drug manufacturers, the flexible business model offered by Dowpharma allows it to play a strong supporting role in the development of new innovative therapeutic products from clinical stage through commercial launch.
